Gators are raised locally in farms to be slaughtered for meat.  Gator tail is sort of a delicacy 'round these parts!
Click below to see pictures from one of the gator farms here in my neck of the woods.  It is called Gatorama, located in Palmdale, Florida.
 
 On another page, you can see a few photos that were taken at Wooten's Alligator Farm in the Florida Everglades.  They have a sign posted that states that all of their adult gators were removed from residential areas and golf courses as nuisance animals.
